ELAB Extra/Keepin’ it Local – “So You Think You’re a Local” Trivia Tuesday at Ulrich’s
From Seamus Gallivan – Buffalo First sought the services of Dana Saylor for their “Keepin’ it Local” column; Dana wanted to write about Buffalo First for her “ELAB Extra” column – collaboration wins again…and for the record, Dana is on The Good Neighborhood team for this event, and you’re all going down…

“BuffaLove” is a recently-coined word that has been thrown around a lot lately, including by yours truly, thanks in part to Jason Lloyd Clement of the National Trust’s Buffalo Unscripted film. Since their sojourn to Buffalo, the ensuing National Preservation Conference, and premiere of the film, we’ve all been flying high on a cloud of “BuffaLove”. Plentiful positive press and lots of upbeat visitors have had their effect.
No wonder the response to Buffalo First’s “So You Think You’re a Local” trivia night has been huge! It takes place Tuesday, November 15th, at Ulrich’s Tavern. This is the second annual, organized by Sarah Bishop, and I had the pleasure of participating the first time around…what a blast! I came in a little late with my friend, joined a team, and by the time we got to the lightning round, I was on fire! My hand must have been up in the air on every single question, with support from my teammates. The subjects included Buffalo history, sports, and geography, many of which were trickier or more challenging than one might expect! But, with our shared knowledge, we came in second, and had an absolutely great time. My face hurt from laughing and smiling when we left.
Everyone was shocked to learn that I had only lived in Buffalo for two years at that point. Accumulating enough local trivia knowledge to beat out native city-dwellers is kinda my thing, though. I am, and always have been, a person who loves to learn. And when that learning involves history, research, and random facts, it’s even better! As a genealogist and historian, I’ve soaked up a great deal of Buffalo’s past stories like a sponge, because all that background informs and enriches my experience as a transplant in this place. I love to share what I’ve picked up along the way with others and see their enthusiasm and understanding of Buffalo increase. What a rewarding thing to do.
I encourage everyone to attend the event on Tuesday, whether on a team (only $5 per person, five-person teams), or as an observer. Aside from learning a bunch of fascinating things, you’ll be able to enjoy local beer in a historic local place, with some darn cool locals.
