Squeaky Bi-Weekly – Residency Applications Open; Channels Screening at Library

First, in INTERNATIONAL news, the deadline is very quickly approaching for applying for Squeaky’s International Media Artist/Filmmaker Residency. This Residency program, which is funded by the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts, is directed towards mid-career experimental filmmakers and media-makers who reside outside of the WNY region.

The idea is that we bring someone in, give them a place to stay, and let them use all of Squeaky’s facilities for a month. They get to know Buffalo as they focus in on a particular project, video, or film that they complete and premiere, all before leaving! Sometimes, even if the artist’s original proposal isn’t very site-specific, they get so inspired by this locale that they end up somehow incorporating it into what they do. Last year’s International Artist in Residence George Bagdasarov, for example, supplemented the project he originally planned on doing with an experimental film about our grain elevators.

This is a really fantastic opportunity, so please pass the information along to all your beyond-WNY artist friends! The deadline to apply is January 31^st and all the information they need is available right here!

Now, a story of more LOCAL interest: I don’t want to write TOO much about this because I’ve already written plenty about our great Channels: Stories from the Niagara Frontier program, BUT next Thursday, February 2^nd, is the kick-off for our month-long screening and discussion series at the Buffalo & Erie County Public Library at 1 Lafayette Square downtown.

 

If you missed the premiere in December, this is your chance to not only see the videos on the big screen, but also to hear the filmmakers, producing organizations, and other knowledgeable and interesting people talk about the issues and answer any questions you might have. The screenings will be happening every Thursday at noon, so bring your lunch!

As I already mentioned, we kick off on the 2^nd of February with Everybody Lives Downstream by Anna Scime & Buffalo Niagara RIVERKEEPER, following on the 9^thwith Reclamation by John Fink & the Lutheran Church of the Resurrection, continue on the 16^th with Living in the Shadow of the Bridge by Mark Barner & the Columbus Park Association, and wrap it all up on the 23^rd with You Are Where You Live by Vince Mistretta & the Clean Air Coalition of WNY.
