Although Buffalo’s music scene is mourning the coming closing on account of financial issues of core music club The Mohawk Place after a 22-year run, the club’s caretakers have curated a cavalcade of catch-it-while-you-can shows and a two-day “Last Waltz” throwdown to carry the classic dive to its day of reckoning – and in a classy last bow, donating all admission earnings from those final two nights to the Food Bank of Western New York. $10 tickets (ages 21+) go on sale today at noon at Town Ballroom (681 Main St) or via Ticketmaster.
Most folks who frequented Mohawk have favorite memories – mine transcend the whiffy walls of the club itself and legendary sweat-fests within from the likes of locals Irving Klaws to touring titans Th’Legendary Shack Shakers, to the landscape out in the street from post-Thursday at the Square sidewalk sets form the Mohawk Street Saints, to street-closed scenes from the Americanarama festival, to seeing seemingly random musicians rocking Mohawk t-shirts as far as the South By Southwest festival in Austin.
Further, most of Mohawk’s faithful and have seen made a scene with the bands on the bill for the club’s last dance, listed as follows –
Friday, January 11th, 2013 (7pm doors) – Irving Klaws, Bobo, Wolf Tickets, Chosen Ones, Bensin, Returners, TMMC, Trailer Park Tornadoes, White Whale
Saturday, January 12th, 2013 (7pm doors) – Girlpope, Chylde, Two Cow Garage, Handsome Jack, Johnny Nobody, The Old Sweethearts, Roger Bryan and The Orphans, Semi-Tough, On Beta, Failures Union, Thermidors
Dig this tune from final-night performers Handsome Jack – it’s got the kind of sweaty, shoutin’, rowdy, rockin’, cheap-beer-swillin’ sound that I’ll always associate with Mohawk. May it find a new home soon in, as The Old Sweethearts say, the “Arms of the Town.”
