It’s that time of the year again; a time for family and friends, for cheerful tunes on the radio, a time for trudging through that Buffalo weather and finding that perfect gift for someone you care about. This year, on Friday, December 5th from 6-9pm, finding that gift just got a little easier. Starlight Studio and Art Gallery (340 Delaware Ave, downtown Buffalo) is proud to host their annual winter show, “Snow is Overrated,” to bring to you the best holiday shopping in town created by the many talented artists involved in the Starlight art program.
Starlight Studio and Art Gallery is an art studio and day habilitation for adults with learning disabilities and the art program for the Learning Disabilities Association of WNY. It is located right in the heart of downtown Buffalo which makes it a perfect opportunity for the people of this community to spend their money this holiday season buying local. Buffalo, the “City of Good Neighbors,” is also a city of small businesses. Many people in the community realize that reinvesting back into the community can help increase the strength of our economy and the general spirit of our population and Starlight Studio is a great place to start.
There will be several types of art on display, from Chase L’s shiny clay dinosaur head sculptures to Larell P’s mixed media collages on plexi-glass, Jocelyn T’s large weavings on burlap to Angela R’s beaded jewelry – there is something for everyone. Many of the Starlight artists have made ornaments that would be perfect for holiday decorating or to hang in your home all year round.
In addition to the hundreds of artworks on display, there will be live music from the band, “Bees, Bumblebees, and Drones.” Carra Stratton (hurdy-gurdy), Jeremy Spindler (accordion), and Jeanine Giffear (flute) will play holiday and French traditional music of the past centuries from the old continent. It will be a night filled with acoustic traditional music, with buzzing and flying melodies ready to pollinate all of our ears.
Ignore the snow, it’s overrated anyway; enjoy the company of your neighbors while picking out the gifts that you will not only be giving to your loved ones, but in turn giving back to your community.
Starlight Studio is a vibrant art studio located in downtown Buffalo that supports adults with disabilities in their artistic development. Along with exhibitions by the starlight artists, the public gallery is available to the community for other exhibitions. Our mission is to provide an open-art studio environment with individualized guidance as needed for the cultivation of artistic expression with people who have disabilities. Created by the Learning Disabilities Association of Western New York (LDA of WNY) in 2005. Starlight Studio and Art Gallery is the first studio of its kind in WNY.
